Rue Royale are an Anglo-American duo (Ruth hailing from the Midlands and Brookln from St Louis, USA), named after a road running through the Chicago suburbs where they first started to play together. With a shared love of Fleetwood Mac, John Martyn and Northern Soul, they began to develop their own distinctive sound of beautifully constructed and deceptively complex vocal and percussive arrangements.
Constantly travelling, playing every kind of venue, from intimate house shows, to the legendary squat site Sturmglocke in Hanover and festivals such as Eurosonic and End of The Road. The popularity of both their live shows and two albums, both self-released, has led to airplay on MTV and radio in the US and as well as BBC 6music and XFM in the UK, topping their weekly “Music Response” ballot. Their second album, Guide To An Escape, is had an official release by Sinnbus earlier this year.
Say Now Would You, is an exclusive to NeedNoWater, with a remix for this single provided by Plaisir De France. Julien Barthes aka Julien Plaisir De France is well known to NeedNoWater fans now, having provided remixes for This Is The Kit, Rozi Plain and Catriona Irving’s Sitting On The Shelf. His band Slove, a project with Leo Hellden (of Tristesse Contemporaine), is going from strength to strength in his native France, having just released their debut album on Pschent. Here he breathes a new life into Rue Royale’s song with his usual French electro-house magic, nudging the song from radio-friendly toe-tapper straight to the dancefloor.
This comes packaged with a fantastic remix from New York’s Night Plane of Halfway Blind, a track from Rue Royale’s second album, Guide To An Escape. Night Plane first started catching attention from his Chinese Shadows release on cult label THISISNOTANEXIT, then his dream-house bootleg Str8 2 Ur Heart was championed by Soul Clap followed by the likes of DJ Three, Till Von Sein and Sasha. Last year his haunting tune Parallel Lines made it onto Soul Clap’s mix for Art Department’s No.19 label, and his well-loved remix of LA girl rockers Warpaint lit up deep house dancefloors. This year, his Heartbeat EP is the first release on Soul Clap’s new label, Soul Clap Records, out in October. For Halfway Blind, Night Plane puts his brew of indie guitars and trippy vocals to work on Rue Royale’s original, forming his own dreamy interpretation of the track.
